Hello! Welcome to the Songbird Therapy blog! My hope is to let you know a little about who I am as a therapist and human, and also hopefully give you information that may be helpful in your life. This may look like stories that I have personally experienced in my own life, common themes that come up in therapy (including my own), articles that I have come across, resources that I have found helpful personally or for my clients, etc.

If you read through my landing page, you've seen that I am a certified music therapist (both here in Canada and the US) and a counsellor. My goal since undergrad has been to combine the modalities of music therapy and talk therapy. Most of us have experienced the power of music in some way, and being able to pair the potential for emotional processing that music can provide and the therapeutic relationship can mean big growth and revelations.

Now that I am also a counsellor, I am not planning on leaving music therapy behind, but I am shifting a little. There is a common misconception that you have to be a musician to participate in music therapy, but that's definitely not the case. Music therapy is not about performance, it's about the process. So, with this in mind, my therapy work blends the two together, using music therapy just like any other modality - only when it is appropriate for my clients. So if it feels like listening and analyzing lyrics around a particular theme would be useful, I will offer the idea to my clients and see if they vibe with it. If not, we'll try something else. My sessions are lead by you, because YOU are the expert in your own life. I'm just here to witness and support however I can.

Who are my clients, you may ask? Many of the people I work with share that they feel stuck in some aspect of their life and want to deepen their connection to themselves and others. I specialize in working with clients who are experiencing grief and big life transitions (divorce, death, retirement, empty nest, etc.), relationship struggles, exploring aspects of sexuality and kink, Consensual Non-Monogamy (with partners or solo), folx in both the 2SLGBTQIA+ and kink communities, and people managing general life shittiness.

My aim to to create a space where we can explore patterns and themes together. I care about making people feel comfortable; I won't push you, but when appropriate, I may challenge or try to stretch your perspective to see where it will take us. That said, I'll never force anyone to open up if they're not ready. For therapy to work, it's a fine balance between stepping out of your comfort zone while knowing that you can get back there quickly when you need to reground yourself. It's important for us to go at a pace you're comfortable with, AND discomfort can lead to monumental growth.

I strive to create a place that everyone can feel welcome and brave to share and grow. I have worked with many members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ and kink communities and I am body and sex positive.

Counselling can be a space to explore and express aspects of ourselves without judgment. Together, we can create a plan that best suits your needs so you can live the life you want on YOUR terms.

On that note, I think that this a a good snapshot of me and my practice, as well as an intro to the blog! If you have questions please reach out and we'll chat!

Remember: you're worth the time it takes to be comfy in your own skin <3

I aim to create a welcoming and brave space for 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and I work from a body and sex positive, affirming lens. I believe that Black, Brown, Indigenous and Trans lives matter and that therapy is political. What I mean by this is that we do not exist in isolation from external factors. Race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and other societal factors influence and shape our experience. Ignoring this and other intersectionalities in the therapy room is doing you a disservice and I want to honour all parts of you.
