Therapy FAQs

Get Informed

Here are some common questions about therapy to help you understand the process better. Feel free to reach out if you have more specific wonderings!

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, sessions are completely confidential. Your privacy and trust are extremely important to me and information shared during sessions is kept in strict confidence**. I follow professional guidelines and ethical standards and use both HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act in the USA) and PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act in Canada) compliant technology to make sure that your information is kept safe.

**There are certain situations when safety is concerned that I may need to break confidentiality, but if that is the case, we will talk about it and make a plan. Please click here to read about consent and limits of confidentiality.

How long are therapy sessions?

Therapy sessions typically last around 50 minutes. This is to make sure that we can wrap up in a way that feels safe and authentic to you, while still giving a few minutes of cushion so I can start with my next client on time. The length may vary depending on individual needs and the type of therapy being offered. I want to make sure that we have enough time to get into the meaningful stuff and finish in a way that doesn't feel rushed, so if you feel that you need longer sessions this is absolutely something we can discuss :)

How many sessions will I need?

The number of therapy sessions varies for each person and is based on personal goals, progress, and what you're looking to gain from sessions. I don't want you to be in therapy forever. My goal is to work with you to support you in trusting your inner strengths (they're in there, sometimes we just forget where to look!) and to eventually end our sessions, or at least reduce to just a check in and/or tune up every few months. It's a collaborative process, and together we'll determine the most suitable treatment plan for you.

Trans, BIPOC Pride Flag

I aim to create a welcoming and brave space for 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and I work from a body and sex positive, affirming lens. I believe that Black, Brown, Indigenous and Trans lives matter and that therapy is political. What I mean by this is that we do not exist in isolation from external factors. Race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and other societal factors influence and shape our experience. Ignoring this and other intersectionalities in the therapy room is doing you a disservice and I want to honour all parts of you.
